The Mavenjoy CDO has shown us the benefits of a holistic pet care approach time and time again. There was the miraculous chiropractic adjustment to relieve neck pain from a fall that left her screeching like a hyena and her "mama" channeling Shirley McClain in the hospital scene of Terms of Endearment. Then there was the impressive, full court press of emergency veterinary care that saved her from a felt pad off the bottom of a chair leg that had perfectly lodged in her small intestine. And there's our continued awe for the merits of homeopathic remedies for just about anything and everything under the sun. Plus a little acupuncture thrown in over the years for good measure. And certainly there could be no substitute for the kindly, patient bedside manner of our local town vet -- whether a panicked phone call about ingested bubble gum or a 2AM visit on a frigid winter morning. And quite possibly the most fundamental piece of our holistic approach, her food and our quest to find the best pet food for her while happening upon a genuine pet nutrition guru in the process.
What set us on our way to a more holistic pet care approach was The Nature of Animal Healing by Martin Goldstein. I read it for the first time over ten years ago and to this day whip it out regularly for tips and natural therapies for everything from fleas to elevated liver enzymes. And his masterful yet plainspoken analysis connecting disease and diet prompted our search and permanent switch to better pet food once and for all. As a holistic veterinarian, Dr. Goldstein helps us see beyond the symptoms to understand the bigger picture of what our pet's behavior, actions, test results or illnesses might be telling us. This allows us to make better decisions about how to care for them. He discusses when conventional medicine is a must and how to best complement it with alternative medicine for pets and natural pet remedies.
